How do I enroll?
Here are the ways in which you can enroll in Medicare:
- Going on ssa.gov and enrolling online
- Visiting a Social Security office and enrolling in person
- Calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 to enroll via phone
Also, if you have been getting Social Security benefits, benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board, or have been getting disability for 24 months, then you are automatically enrolled.
When can I enroll?
You can only enroll in Medicare during specified times within the year. These periods are the Initial Enrollment Period, General Enrollment Period, and Open Enrollment Period.
Initial Enrollment Period
The Initial Enrollment Period is the best time to join. It is strongly encouraged because when you join at this time, you won’t have to worry about late fees. This period starts three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after you turn 65.

General Enrollment Period
This period lasts from January 1 to March 31 of each year. Any eligible individual can join Medicare at this time. Once signed up, your coverage will begin on July 1 of that year.
Open Enrollment Period
The Open Enrollment Period is when you can switch, drop, or make changes to your Medicare Plan. This enrollment period only applies if you’re already enrolled in Medicare.
Can I join outside of these specified time windows?
Yes. Medicare has the Special Enrollment Period for certain instances. These instances include, but are not limited to:
- Moving to an area outside of your network coverage
- Disenrolling from your employer’s health insurance plan
- Returning to the U.S. after residing in a foreign country
