What are the requirements?

Outside of certain circumstances, you have to be at least 65 before you qualify for Medicare. You’re first eligible to join during the Initial Enrollment Period, which extends three months before the month of your 65th birthday, and then three months after. It is wise to join at this point. When you join this way, your Part A premium may be free of charge. If you miss this window, you’ll have to wait until January 1 of the following year. Then your window will be from January 1 to March 31.

How can I get Medicare before I turn 65?

You can get Medicare before 65 if you:

  • Have been on disability for 24 months
  • Get Social Security benefits
  • Receive benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB)
  • Are afflicted with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
  • Have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

How do other health insurance plans affect eligibility?

Original Medicare can be added to your existing health insurance as either a primary or secondary source of coverage. Original Medicare also does not make you ineligible for other forms of health insurance, and other forms of health insurance do not make you ineligible for Original Medicare.

But that is not the case with Medicare Advantage. You are given an option between other health insurance and Medicare Advantage. In a sense, you are ineligible for Medicare Advantage unless you drop your current health insurance to acquire it.
